Old West Boots, Iron Wall Hanging Online Catalog

Old West Boots Iron Wall Hangings

Cowboys didn't have many possessions. The Ones they were the proudest of were their horses, gear and their boots. Boots were often found in creative designs that depict a cowboy's individuality. One again, R.A. Guthrie Designs captures this realism in its new collection of western boots wall art.

Everyone has had at least one pair of cowboy boots. Maybe you wore yours while you rode the range on your favorite horse or while you rode your stick horse around the house. Cowboy boots are part of our American history. Today, we still proudly wear our boots for work and play Traditional cowboy boots have narrow toes, high heels that slope under the foot, and leather tops that reach halfway up the shins. Designed for men who spent virtually their entire day in the saddle.

Cowboy boots did not just happen. They evolved from functional, performance footwear designed to add to the safety of the cowboy while he worked. In the late 1800's the tall topped, high-heeled boot provided protection for the cowboy against rain, mud, brush and critters, and added a layer of protection between the pants and the leg. The high under slung heel gave the cowboy added safety by keeping his heel from slipping through the stirrup. The high leather heel also gave better stability on the ground by "digging in," allowing for better footing. The tall leather shaft protected the cowboy from the threats of the range: barbed wire, snakes, thorns and more. The boot shaft also absorbed the friction between the horse and the cowboy's leg.

Cowboy boots have also led a long double life as fashion accessories, beginning in the early 20th century, when Western life and work done on the open range were first mythologized in movies. Most cowboy boots that are manufactured now are not sold to people who will ever wear them on a horse, and the boots are valued more for the image they have acquired than the work they were originally intended to do.
